3rd Melanesian Arts and Cultural Festival

Category: SSS News

Ms. Vivian Koster, Coordinator of the Diploma in Youth, facilitated the 'Youths of Melanesia: Moving towards a sustainable life' workshop at the 3rd Melanesian Arts and Cultural Festival.

Ms. Vivian Koster, the Coordinator of the Diploma in Youth in Development Work was called upon to facilitate a youth-emphasis workshop at the 3rd Melanesian Arts and Cultural Festival. The workshop was part of a one-week Symposium Programme held at the Holiday Inn in Suva from Tuesday 3 October to Friday 6 October 2006. Participants in the workshop were drawn primarily from Fiji, PNG and New Caledonia. While discussions were kept as informal as possible with scope for a wide-range of issues, the primary focus of the workshop was HIV/AIDS.  Participants agreed that this was indicative of the seriousness of the issue to the countries of Melanesia. Some of the key points raised were:

- Knowledge alone is not enough. There needs to be a combination of knowledge, skills, and services.

-To alienate church and culture from discussions concerning HIV/AIDS is to alienate everyone.

-We must empower young people to make decisions for their own benefit.

-We must empower parents with the skills to talk to their children.

-Whatever method/ means is used to get the message across, it MUST BE CONSISTENT.
