School of Social Sciences to host Pacific Drug and Alcohol Research Network (PDARN) Web Site.

Category: SSS News

Web site will contribute to disseminating research into alcohol-related problems in the Pacific.

The social, economic, health and political impact on development of both licit and illicit drug use (including alcohol) are well documented, as are the links with poverty and social deprivation. In order to develop appropriate responses and policies we need good empirical and epidemiological research data. The second meeting of the Pacific Drug and Alcohol Research Network (PDARN) brought together representatives from ministries of health, law enforcement agencies, community based organisations, regional funding bodies, research and education institutions to further explore these issues in the wider context of the Pacific, where the problems are tangible, yet the research-base is limited.

Bruce Yeates, Head of the School of Social Sciences participated in the PDARN meeting held at Lautoka, Fiji, 17 – 20 July 2006. He presented a paper entitled: ‘The University of the South Pacific Restructure: Engaging the Pacific Drug Research Network." As a result of the presentation a decision was made to investigate hosting the networking and communication functions of the PDARN in the School of Social Sciences, Faculty of Arts and Law, the University of the South Pacific. Recent discussions with the Dean of the Faculty indicate that the School can host the web site. Negotiations are now underway to secure the design and maintenance costs of the web site.
